About the Film

My Graphic

Who do you love? How will you die? CRY tells the story a bullied teenager struggling to survive his high school torments and a lonely elderly man wrestling with the loss of his wife and his own mortality. When a tragic accident entangles their lives, their budding friendship presents both with a glimmer of hope. They discover how to escape their self-imposed fortresses of solitude.

Director's Statement

Image

CRY began, quite literally, as a dream. Several dreams, really. The first dream was that of a 6th grade boy using his father's abandoned 8mm camera to make movies, splicing together footage of his friends with Godzilla and Rodan reels, cut with razor blades and glued together with scotch tape. The second dream was of a 8th grade boy spending almost every day of that summer in a darkened theater watching Star Wars and daring to think I want to make movies. The third dream was that of an old man, weeping at his kitchen table.

Why was he crying?

He was crying because he had to.

He was crying for those young boys who had forgotten their dreams.

CRY evolved organically from there, expanding outward from that powerful image of a lonely man weeping at his table in the dark. To make it real, I took a picture of an actor friend sitting at a table with an empty can of beer, an exact replica of the image in the dream, and used the image to inspire me to write. I listened to Zoë Keating and wrote from the inside to the out. I wrote, day after day. Then one day, I had a finished script.

And I still ignored the dream.

Finally, another dream came. A particularly famous actor, in the guise of his most famous character (a starship captain) said to me You have permission to try, even if you fail.

I woke from that dream free of the fear and doubt that had been paralyzing me. Within two years and with the valuable help of many of people, we had edited that draft down to a shooting script and we filmed CRY.

The journey didn't stop there, though. Exhaustion, frustration, and doubt crept back in even after the film was in the can. Even after we showed the film at festivals and won praise and awards, I still doubted the film. Something was not right. Something was still out of place.

Thoughts kept churning around in my head, but I untangle what was troubling me. I had tried, regardless of the risk, to make my first feature film. Why did I feel incomplete?

Months and years passed. Then, as it happens, I am sitting in a darkened theater again, watching the original Star Wars trilogy again, this time with my nephew who is the same age I was when I first saw the the first Star Wars. And Yoda said the words I had forgotten: Do or do not; there is no try.

That was it.

I took the film completely apart and started over. I looked at every shot, every sound, and every cue again. I cut scenes out. I moved shots around. I replaced old ideas with new ones. I rebuilt the film to be the very best I knew how to make it. I made a film I was finally, truly, happy with.

I finally made that dream. This is that film.

Cry allowed me to explore loss and love. As hard as it is to get back in the game, after missed opportunities, one must pick themselves up and finish the game. Cry explores how people decide to finish the game. Winner or loser...the end result is how we play it.
